Only for Big Buddy
5 Stars
Only for Big Buddy
This hose assembly only works on Big Buddy models, so don’t get it for any others (Buddy, Hunters Buddy, Flex, etc). It eliminates the need for the “Filter” to avoid possible heater damage from oils in most rubber hoses, so although it costs more than many it’s easier to connect (once you’ve done it a few times). Don’t order a “filter” with this, it doesn’t connect anywhere on this. The QD connection is in the end farthest away from the control knob on the heater (see pics of it with and without hose). If you want the heater to last as long as possible, using this regulator (saving the wear on the built-in ones) can extend the life (where this is easily replaced when needed). Otherwise I can get the heater to go on high using a hose like F273704 to the “disposable tank” port (others say you won’t go to high using it, but look at my pics). It can take a few minutes to get gas thru either hose to the heater and get lit, but it will go.The one issue some seem to have is the OPD tank connector. I’ve seen one of those where it wouldn’t open the hidden “safety valve” on tanks because a small plastic sleeve/washer was warn inside and wouldn’t force the brass fitting in (see pic). Someone with a 3D printer made a replacement sleeve easy, but that shouldn’t be needed from normal connecting & disconnecting (making me wish they put a POL fitting on it if all those have that issue after 30+ uses). I realize many like the standard tightening of the OPD and it may go quicker, but if it wears out that easy I’ll take the POL. At least the regulator has ¼ NPT on both sides where it seems you can replace it without needing to throw out the whole hose.

This is the best option for your Mr. Heater Big Buddy, and I'll tell you why, and I'll give you a useful tip.

USEFUL TIP:
When you first connect this, and try to fire up your heater, You will be surprised at how long it takes to light your heater. Because it is 12', and because the gas is regulated to a very low pressure at the tank side of the hose, IT TAKES A FULL 90 SECONDS FOR THE PROPANE TO FILL THE HOSE AND REACH THE PILOT LIGHT. I have tried it seasonally four times now. It is not 70 seconds. Not 80. It is 90. Every. Time. I suggest you connect, open the propane tank, twist your knob and hold it down (prime) for 80 sec before you even try to light it with a new hose. Don't be tricked by a very faint smell of propane, it will take 90 seconds. Have I driven the point hard enough? But only need to do this priming once a season; I can swap out propane tanks and will not need to repeat the 90s priming.

PROS OF THIS HOSE:

- it has a pressure regulator on the hose at the tank side, which is why it costs more, but the regulator offers a consistent 1/2psi of pressure to your heater.

- the low pressure is safer in case of propane leakage in the system (hose, heater, element). You are less likely to have leaks with lower pressure.

- the low pressure means that your hose will not leech the rubber oils that ruin so many people's Big Buddy. You don't need a filter at the heater side because there is no leeching.

- powers the heater on full for a long, long time.

- has a great, easy to hookup fast connector for the heater. Face your heater, open the tank compartment on your left, and look for the 4" shiny connector dropping down from the top behind the in-built regulator hookup for the small 1lb tank. That's where you connect.

- using this, you spare your internal connectors and regulators for when you go mobile. Eventually, regulators get used, gummy, or go bad. If you use this hose, your internal regulators last longer.

- when you shut off the propane from the tank, the heater dies out very quickly. I understand that with the high-pressure hose, it takes a while for the propane in the hose to burn off.

CONS:

- costs more than high-pressure hose. Seems like a lot of cash for a hose.

- the regulator may eventually gum up. Mine has. I used it every workday in my home office for 14 months (that's a lot), and now found my heater was cutting out when on the highest setting. So I bought a new hose like this, and instantly my heater is working 100% again. But instead of gumming up my internal regulators (and ruining the whole heater) I wore out the cheaper hose.

I love my big buddy heater! This hose works great! Buuuuttt....there are a few things that I figured out by trial and error that might help you if you are going to buy and use this hose. I like so many other people here have had trouble lighting their heater with this hose. It's not that there is something wrong with the hose, it's mainly because of the 12ft length and the fact that there is air trapped in the hose when it's not being used. Last time I checked air isn't flammable so what you need to do is purge the air from the hose before you connect it to the heater. Now what I'm about to tell you, the manufacturer probably can't tell you just because it could possibly be dangerous, but as long as you don't do anything stupid while doing this, ie. smoking or being near an open flame or wearing a static-y christmas sweater etc....if your not an idiot you should be fine. First connect your hose to the tank, turn the tank on, listen for the click of the safety device, take a pointy object, ie. pen, pocket screwdriver, nail, screw depress the plunger on the quick connector. Be careful as you do this because you will be releasing the trapped air and propane gas! Keep the plunger depressed for a few seconds, the smell of propane should go from slight to very pungent. Congratulations! The air in the hose has been purged! Connect your hose to your Buddy heater and light the pilot light as you normally would. It should fire up after a few tries. Now feel the HEAT!

After using this hose reliably for a number of years...I ran into my first problem with it. After connecting everything and depressing the plunger I got no gas...! Puzzled I checked and rechecked the connections, just as I stated above I listened for the telltale click...and I didn't get one. I disconnected the "ACME" connector from the tank and found that the thermal safety bushing had broken off and fell out somewhere. For those of you that don't know what a thermal safety bushing is...it is a white plastic washer that melts and disconnects the propane tank from the hose if it catches on fire. So since my thermal safety bushing cracked off and fell out....try as I may, the gas would not flow out of the tank because the missing bushing was not allowing the nipple on the connector to depress the valve on the tank! Resulting in no gas flow! So I bought a replacement "ACME" connector here on Amazon
Mr. Heater Propane Acme Nut X 1/4-Inch Male Pipe Thread, Black  Slapped that baby on with some teflon tape and I was back in business! I didn't have to buy a new hose.

I wasn't disappointed that the safety bushing broke...it happens. Iv'e had them break on other propane accessories as well, so I can't blame the company for that. I still give the product 5 stars! Well hopefully I can help at least 1 person with my experiences with the mr heater hose...so have a nice warm day!

Let's face it! The Big Buddy Heater is a TERRIFIC heater! On low settings, the small disposable gas bottles work fine. But if you need to crank up the heat and make use of the 18,000 BTU output, the gas in the small bottles will go quickly! The Answer? A larger gas bottle! Recommended size? a 20 lb. Now to get the gas from the bottle to the heater - safely! That's where this wonderful hose comes in! It has a quick disconnect on one end to connect easily to the Big Buddy Heater. That's right! Easily! I read some reviews about the heater that said the hose was hard to connect. I don't know, maybe they were trying o connect the hose with the small bottle also connected in place! It they did, that would, in deed, be difficult! But hey, disconnect the small bottles (if connected) and pull the sliding part of the hose connector back, shove it up onto the fitting on the heater and release the slide, pushing it up to ensure a solid connection. That's it! Connect the other easy connector to the gas bottle, hand tighten, turn on the gas and proceed with the lighting instructions for the heater! The 12 foot hose is long enough generally to place the bottle outside with the hose through a small opening in a window or door. You should have a bit of fresh air anyway! Enjoy the heat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Accessory for my Mr. Big Buddy Heater
Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2014
I occasionally work inside my garage to build devices for use with our kid's school science fair and I purchased a Mr. Big Buddy Heater to warm up the garage space in the cold winter months. However, the heater was very hungry for gas and the small cans would not last very long. I ordered this accessory to connect my gas heater to our propane tank and it worked very well. The hose stays flexible even at very low temps and I can run the heater for a week without having to replace the gas tanks, it saves me time and money.
The fit is perfect too, it connects to the existing connector inside the Mr. Big Buddy Heater and the other end attaches to standard propane tank that I used with my BBQ.
